NOTES
1. The Erratics team in full: Roberts, Meller, Khawaja, Heller, Dunabin, Evans, Bush, Walker,
Brookes, Rivington, Parsley M.
2. When Martin Parsleys first seven balls yielded two fours and two sixes, his team mates
feared that skipper James Rivington had given Martin too long a spell. A wicket with his tenth ball started
a remarkable spell in which Martin took seven wickets for just five runs: his scalps included the
Shalbourne No. 1, who had scored 104.
3. The Erratics innings began with a steady opening stand of 28. Thereafter wickets fell
regularly, as the Erratics made poor progress towards the target. When the skipper went out to block for
a draw, it became apparent that the teams were making different assumptions about the rules of play:
although it was clearly a time game, local custom appeared not to allow the draw. This
surprising interpretation had not been revealed in the two previous playings of this recent fixture.
Shalbourne belatedly adjusted their tactics, but James and Martin successfully held out. In the pub
afterwards, each side seemed content to claim the result it favoured.
