NARRATIVE
Ten Erratics lined up against a team of Artificials that was initially only eight strong.
John Truscott and Chris Dunabin fell to consecutive deliveries. Bill Bush clubbed a couple of boundaries and departed. This brought Brian Berrigan to the crease, to join Nasir Khawaja. By the end of the 30th over, both had passed fifty, Brian slightly ahead on 67. In the next two overs Brian smashed 33 runs to reach his century (18 fours, 1 six), and promptly retired in contempt the partnership with Nasir worth 168 runs. Tim Kirkham added 14 in three scoring strokes.
An eccentric choice of early bowlers gave the Artficials a chance to chase the target, and the opening pair put on 89. Finally Andy Wallace broke through, and he and Tim Kirkham set about dismantling the rest of the batting line-up with their pacy bowling. Having got fed up watching England draw with Switzerland in Euro 96, James Rivington had come along to spectate; unwisely he volunteered to be a 9th Artificial, and a fired-up Andy was ready to liven things up for him. Fortunately, before damage could be inflicted, Nasir stumped the other bat off skipper Michael Evans first ball; because he had taken two wickets with the last two deliveries of the Evenley innings the week before, Michael had now earned himself a hat trick.
