London Erratics v Great Milton
at Great Milton

A good day’s cricket

Bill Bush had recruited a strong Erratics side for this match, but having broken his finger at Evenley he had to drop out himself and asked James Rivington to captain. Great Milton won the toss and elected to bat on this gloriously sunny day.
With Matthew Eltringham bowling three maidens on the trot, and Mark Hattam quickly picking up the first wicket, the Erratics thought they were going to have a gentle workout in the field. But Great Milton always have a way of moving the score along. Richard Heller began with a wicket maiden; but he and John Truscott then suffered a lean spell — John was particularly unfortunate when Chris Dunabin, rather than catch a firm shot at mid-on, instead allowed it to knock him over. Nasir Khawaja earned Richard and the team a rare success in the 23rd over, but the batsmen responded by accelerating the run rate.
It took Ketz Haria a few overs to settle down, then in the 34th over he got the 4th wicket, and the game was suddenly turned on its head. A wicket maiden from Brian Berrigan at the other end was followed by two more wicket maidens from Ketz — and then two wickets in one over from Brian meant that Great Milton had lost six wickets in six overs for six runs (wicked!).
When Chris’s second ball was almost deposited on top of James’s car, the team mildly queried this perverse bowling change. The next long hop was hit high and handsome ... straight down the throat of Mark on the square leg boundary, and the Erratics had become the first team to bowl out Great Milton this season.

Nasir put bat to ball, before failing to satisfy Chris’s exacting standards (what is it between those two?). When Peter Andrews gave up in despair, John Truscott joined Tony Poulter and together they set about winning the match.
Tony started as he meant to continue, with a succession of brutal boundaries. His score of 62 included just six runs not hit in boundaries. John played with great style, and lofted a fine six over long-on. The two of them scored so quickly that the scorers missed announcing both the 50 and the 100 partnerships.
With the bowlers bludgeoned into submission and the target in sight, Tony suddenly fell, and Matthew missed out in the same over. John went a couple of overs later, but Brian (batting for the first time since Alvington — in a helmet) and Mark saw the team home, Mark finishing the game off with successive fours.
