MATCH REPORT (by our special correspondent)
Weather: absolute scorcher.
On paper, a strong batting line-up for the Erratics on a fairly decent pitch meant that the decision to bat first was an easy one. Michael Long and John Truscott opened up very cautiously and struggled a little against some tight bowling. The opening pair scored at only around 2 runs an over without looking in any great danger — the first breakthrough came with an unfortunate injury to Michael Long. In playing a shot for one run he felt a severe pain in his lower leg. The amusement at seeing him hobble down to the other end was overtaken by concern once it was realised that he’d torn his calf muscle — rendering him unavailable for around six weeks. Brian Berrigan then replaced Michael and immediately tucked into the bowling giving some momentum to the innings. Brian was unluckily out for 34 to one that kept low, a wicket that sparked a middle order collapse from the much vaunted engine room of the side. Ketz Haria, Bill Bush and David Brook came and went very quickly, whilst John Truscott, on the verge of a deserved half-century was caught. Harry Collins, a debutant from the Heller stable of players then went first ball and the real danger of being bowled out well before tea loomed. Some good late hitting from Giles Middleton, Nasir Khawaja and Richard Heller ensured a competitive total of 184. It was good to see Patrick Cheney padded up and ready at the boundary edge, though sadly he wasn’t needed. [Harry Collins has played for us before — Ed.]
A substitute fielder was coaxed on to replace Michael Long who sat forlornly at the boundary edge, nursing his calf muscle with a bag of frozen peas. Giles Middleton and David Brook opened the bowling well with David finally making the initial breakthrough. A good spell from Patrick Cheney went unrewarded with the few bad balls being punished severely. Richard Heller meanwhile kept things extremely tight at the other end. Wickets, however, weren’t forthcoming. Isis fell a long way behind the required rate and all the ‘bowlers’ were tried, Ketz Haria making the most impact by bowling the dangerous Isis opener with the first ball of his spell. With Isis needing around 15 an over with 5 overs remaining and the Erratics requiring 6 wickets, the match looked to be petering out in a draw when some brutal hitting from a David Brook over, including three sixes meant that there was renewed hope of a win for Isis. With John Truscott keeping things tight at one end another expensive David Brook over followed, however his slower ball accounted for the Isis captain who had scored rapidly. This signalled the end of a positive result for either team and although another two Isis wickets fell in the closing overs, the draw was the outcome and probably the fairest one in the circumstances.
