NARRATIVE
Only ten Erratics lined up against a full team of Bampton players.
The day was sunny and warm. But after the wettest April since records began in 1766, the outfield remained wet and had not been cut. The game was only possible because of Bampton’s artificial strip.
With the ball getting stuck in the long grass, the Erratics batting started slowly. When Nasir Khawaja and James Rivington fell to consecutive deliveries trying to lift the ball, the score had only reached 27. A punchy partnership of 37 between teenage talents Felix Meller and Matthew Neal restored some respectability.
The considered opinion was that this modest target would be tricky to get. However, the Bampton batsmen swung the bat from the outset — their lofted shots frustratingly eluding the field. Richard Heller, in particular, bowled a fine spell with no luck.
The main event was followed by a 10-over beer match. This put things in perspective. Bampton, batting in reverse order, only managed to reach 32 for 5 (Bill Bush claiming 3 wickets). The Erratics comfortably reached 33 for 0, thanks to some aggressive hitting by Martin Parsley (18 not out).
