Nine ‘mature’ Erratics played a Fernhurst team of ten. A coin was tossed, but how it fell no one knows, because the captains mutually agreed that the Erratics should field first.
Michael Stephenson’s third delivery disappeared over the extra cover boundary somewhat ominously, but within a couple of overs the bowlers managed to tighten things up. The fifty was posted in the 13th over, and next ball John Booth managed to slip one past the aggressive No. 1.
The second wicket pair, both young teens, showed no appreciation of Jim Head’s subtle flight and tonked it merrily, bringing up the hundred. But Chris Dunabin’s even more loopy deliveries brought instant success — sharp work by Tremayne Rennell; and next over the other youngster chipped John B to mid-wicket where John Truscott took a well judged catch.
After a 14-over spell John B was given a rest; John T’s first ball was hit hard and flat to deep mid-on, where Jim pocketed it nonchalantly. The No. 6 hit Chris high over the sightscreen, but a flash of Tremayne’s gloves sent him packing the next over. And then John B returned to do double damage — skipper Michael Evans taking an ungenerously alert catch to dismiss a small boy first ball.
James Rivington had been fielding tidily with his one usable hand, and was rewarded with a little trundle at the end. When Michael S wrapped things up, the Erratics were not dissatisfied with the way they had restricted a competitive Fernhurst line up.

The Fernhurst bowlers were instantly dangerous and Mike Long was soon steering the ball into slip’s hands. Jim looked solid and punished anything loose, but John T was made to jump around by the lively attack and he showed much grit to survive. Runs came only steadily: the fifty came up in the 15th over, and when ‘20 overs’ was called the required rate was more than 7 an over.
As the batsmen looked to increase the tempo, John T succumbed to a lapse in concentration. Tremayne lost no time in joining the run chase, and Jim reached fifty with another forceful boundary. And when three overs went for 30 runs, taking the score well past the hundred, the fielding side lost its complacency. But when Jim used his feet to one of the quicks in search of a quick single, he was stranded by the keeper’s direct hit.
Tremayne and John B kept the fielders on their toes — John was dropped when two young lads both tried to catch his skier, Tremayne smacked a gorgeous drive — but the target was too distant. However, a London Erratics side that could easily have been dismissed as London Geriatrics had given a fine display of application, determination and not a little talent.
