Sunday 1 June 2003
London Erratics v Shalbourne
at Shalbourne

A game of two halves — with each half having two halves

Shalbourne kindly lent the Erratics a young lad, David Day, to bring their number up to eleven. The home team itself made a late signing, in the form of ex-England footballer and new Shalbourne resident, Stuart ‘Psycho’ Pearce. A 35-overs game. The Erratics won the toss and elected to field.
After 20 overs, the Erratics had only taken two wickets but had successfully kept the score down to 3.5 runs an over. Then the Shalbourne batsmen cut loose against the later bowling and, as the Erratics became increasingly ragged, were able to take the target to 7 an over.
Padded up as next man in, Mr Pearce was frustrated not to be able to join the fray.

After 22 overs, the Erratics were rattling along at over 6.5 an over, with only two wickets down — a very healthy reply. Then Matthew Eltringham was caught, Tony Poulter was tragically run out, and the game suddenly hung in the balance. The decisive moment came when Michael Evans was bowled by Psycho Pearce, who celebrated his wicket as though he had just scored that penalty.
James Rivington gave the former England fullback more joy, and the tail collapsed. With the game lost, an even younger member of the local Day family was sent in at No. 11 in place of Richard Heller.
